How to Scrap a Car in Birmingham

A step-by-step guide to scrapping a car legally in Birmingham, from getting a quote to telling the DVLA.

1. Get a quote

Send your registration, postcode and a description of the car's condition. A quote depends on make, model, weight, condition, missing parts and current scrap metal prices.

2. Agree collection or drop-off

If you accept the quote, collection can be arranged. Any collection charge is confirmed with you before booking.

3. Hand over the car and paperwork

Have the V5C logbook and photo ID ready. Remove personal items and cancel any parking permits linked to the car.

4. Get paid by a traceable method

Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, paying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal. Payment is made by bank transfer or another traceable method.

5. Tell the DVLA

The DVLA must be told the vehicle has been scrapped. Scrap vehicles must be treated at an Authorised Treatment Facility, which issues a Certificate of Destruction.
